A Note from the Editor
Rocking chairs, lemonade, and the slow sunlit hours. The porch is the best room in a Nantucket cottage — no walls, no clock, just the screen door and the smell of the hedge.
Ask anyone who summers on the island what their favorite room is and they'll say the porch. Not the parlor, not the sunroom, not even the kitchen with its blueberry pancakes — the porch, with its screen door that always slaps twice and its rockers worn smooth from a hundred summers of company.
A Nantucket porch is more an idea than an architectural feature. It is the room where the newspaper is read and the corn is shucked and the sunburn is nursed. It is where guests are welcomed and, three glasses of rosé later, where they are still sitting at midnight, telling stories about a boat they once owned. Everything on it should feel a little weathered, a little forgiving. Wicker that has softened into gray. A rag rug that can be shaken out over the railing. A pair of hydrangea baskets flanking the steps, refreshed each June.
