Before You Order
How to Size and Layer a Rug
- 1. Front legs on, at minimum. Every seat's front legs should touch the rug. All legs on is better.
- 2. 8x10 or 9x12 in a living room. Smaller than that and the furniture looks like it is drifting.
- 3. Layer jute plus flatweave. Leave 12 to 18 inches of the base rug showing on every side.
- 4. Runners want 4 inches of floor. Leave a few inches of bare floor on each side of a hall or kitchen runner.
- 5. Always use a pad. It keeps the rug flat, quiet, and stops it from wearing through at the edges.

- What size rug goes under a living room sofa?
- At minimum the front legs of every seat should sit on the rug — usually an 8x10 for a standard sofa and two chairs, a 9x12 if the room allows. A rug that floats between the furniture makes the room look smaller.
- Is jute too rough for a living room?
- Chunky jute is perfect under a coffee table and in high-traffic paths, but it is scratchy underfoot. Layer a flatweave stripe or a soft wool rug on top where feet actually land.
- Can indoor-outdoor rugs go inside?
- Yes, and they are the honest answer for a kitchen, mudroom or a house with dogs and sand. Polypropylene stripes hose off and dry in an hour.
- How do I layer two rugs?
- Big neutral on the bottom — jute or sisal — with a smaller patterned rug centered on top, leaving 12 to 18 inches of the base showing on every side.
- What rug works in a kitchen?
- A washable runner in front of the sink and a second at the range. Blue-and-white stripe hides more than you'd think and goes in the machine.
