How to Do a Coastal Bath
- 1. Paper every wall. Ceiling included in a powder room. Half-papered walls are what make a small bath look unfinished.
- 2. Light beside the mirror. Sconces at 60 to 66 inches, 30 to 36 inches apart. Overhead-only lighting is unflattering in every bathroom.
- 3. Mirror narrower than the vanity. Two to four inches in on each side, centered at roughly 60 to 65 inches from the floor.
- 4. All-white towels. 600 GSM long-staple cotton. Bleachable, replaceable one at a time, never fights the wallpaper.
- 5. Vinyl-coated in a full bath. Steam and paper only coexist with a good fan and a wipeable finish.

Bathroom Questions
- What makes a small powder room look expensive?
- Wallpaper on every wall including the ceiling, one good mirror, and sconces instead of an overhead light. A powder room is the cheapest room in the house to make dramatic because there is so little square footage to cover.
- Is wallpaper a bad idea in a bathroom?
- Not in a powder room, which has no shower and therefore no steam. In a full bath, use a vinyl-coated or peel-and-stick paper, run the fan every time, and keep the paper off the wall directly behind the tub.
- What size mirror goes over a vanity?
- Two to four inches narrower than the vanity on each side, hung with the center of the glass at about 60 to 65 inches from the floor. A scalloped or arched frame reads softer than a rectangle in a small room.
- How high do bathroom sconces hang?
- About 60 to 66 inches from the floor, flanking the mirror and roughly 30 to 36 inches apart. Side lighting is far more flattering than anything mounted above the glass.
- What towels actually hold up?
- Long-staple cotton in waffle or terry, 600 GSM or higher, in white. White can be bleached, replaced piecemeal, and never fights the wallpaper. Buy two bath sheets and four hand towels per bathroom.
- How do I make a rented bathroom look coastal?
- Peel-and-stick wallpaper, a rattan or rope mirror over the existing one, white waffle towels, a woven basket for extra rolls and a scalloped tray on the counter. All five come out at move-out.
