The Perfect Coastal Living Room

The coastal living room is the hardest room to get right and the easiest to overdo. Too much rope and driftwood and it reads like a seafood restaurant. Too little and it forgets where it is. The trick, as with everything on this island, is restraint — one gesture toward the water, one toward the garden, and the rest kept quiet.

Start with the sofa. A slipcovered linen roll-arm in ivory or oyster, deep enough to lie down on, is the piece the whole room organizes around. Layer a jute or sisal rug beneath it for texture and a wool stripe on top of that for winter. Add a bobbin-turned side table, a ceramic lamp with a linen shade, a driftwood mirror over the mantel. Books stacked flat, not spined, on the coffee table — one about hydrangeas, one about lightship baskets, one about a house nobody can afford.

Color comes in through the pillows and the throw and the single arrangement of blue mopheads on the console. Everything else stays in the family of sand and shell and sea glass. What you're building is a room that feels the same at seven in the morning with a coffee as it does at seven at night with fourteen people spilling in from the beach. Layered, forgiving, and always ready.
