How to Choose Yours
- 1. Rope outside, coir under cover. Braided rope drains and dries in an afternoon, so it belongs on an exposed step. Coir soaks and sheds, so keep it under a portico or a storm door.
- 2. Measure the door swing. Most rope mats sit about ¾" thick. If your storm door clears less than an inch, choose a low-profile rubber-backed mat instead.
- 3. Go wider than the door. A mat should read as a rug, not a stamp — aim for at least 2" of mat past each side of the door casing.
- 4. Layer it. A navy anchor coir mat set on top of a wider cabana-stripe outdoor rug is the trick that makes a plain step look styled.
- 5. Let the door be the color. With a navy or hydrangea-blue door, keep the mat natural and neutral and put the color in a wreath and a pair of planters.

Lobster Rope Doormat Questions
- Are lobster rope doormats actually made from real lobster rope?
- Yes — the mats we carry are hand-woven in Maine from rope reclaimed off working lobster boats, then braided into a mat. That is why the colors read navy, sand and a stray red racing stripe: it is the rope the boats already used.
- Do rope doormats hold up outside in rain and snow?
- They are the most weatherproof mat you can buy. The braided rope is synthetic, it does not absorb water, and rain and melted snow drain straight through. Coir mats, by contrast, hold water and shed fiber, so keep coir under a portico or storm door.
- What size doormat should I buy?
- Go wider than the door. Aim for at least two inches of mat past each side of the door casing so it reads as a rug rather than a stamp. Standard 18x30 inch mats suit a single door; a 24x36 inch mat suits a wide or double door.
- Will a rope mat fit under a storm door?
- Most rope mats are about three quarters of an inch thick. If your storm door clears less than an inch, choose a low-profile rubber-backed mat instead and keep the rope mat at a side or porch door.
- How do you clean a lobster rope doormat?
- Shake it out, then hose it down and stand it on edge to dry. Sand and dirt fall through the weave rather than settling into it, so there is nothing to vacuum and nothing to replace at the end of the season.
- How much does a lobster rope doormat cost?
- Hand-woven Maine rope mats generally run from about $58 to $75 depending on size and pattern. Coastal coir and rubber-backed mats start closer to $28.
