Chapter 1 — The Color Formula

Every Nantucket-inspired room I love comes back to the same three-part formula: a soft warm white, a weathered grey, and one confident blue. The white keeps things bright, the grey grounds the room like a cedar shingle would, and the blue does the emotional work — it makes you think of hydrangeas at the end of a driveway in July.

My go-to picks: Benjamin Moore Simply White for trim, Revere Pewter for walls when you want warmth, and Hale Navy or Van Deusen Blue for a front door, an island, or built-ins. Stop there. The room will feel calm instead of busy.

Chapter 2 — Hydrangeas, Season by Season

Fresh hydrangeas from June through August, dried mophead stems from September through November, faux stems mixed with real eucalyptus in winter, and the first forced lilac branches in early spring. The vase matters more than the flower — keep a white ironstone pitcher, a clear glass cylinder, and one scalloped ceramic bowl on hand and you can style anything.

Tip: cut hydrangea stems at a sharp angle and dip the ends in alum powder for 24-hour blooms that won't wilt by dinner.

Chapter 3 — Front Porch Checklist

• Two rocking chairs or one Adirondack loveseat — never a single chair
• A pair of lanterns flanking the door, candles inside
• A wreath on the door — hydrangea in summer, magnolia in winter
• A natural-fiber doormat layered over a striped runner
• Planters with white hydrangeas, boxwood, or trailing ivy
• One unexpected piece — a vintage buoy, a brass bell, a painted oar
