Gray shingled Nantucket entry in fall with a navy door, blue and white hydrangea wreath, white pumpkins, wicker planters and a copper lantern

The Nantucket Charm Edit

The Blue & White Coastal Fall Entryway

Hydrangeas, wicker and white pumpkins — a New England fall entry with almost no orange in it.

Fall on the island doesn't look like a pumpkin patch.

It looks like a navy door under gray shingles, a hydrangea wreath gone soft at the edges, white heirloom pumpkins on the granite step and a copper lantern that comes on at four-thirty. Keep the palette blue, white, cream and wicker, and the entry carries you from Labor Day straight through Thanksgiving without a second decorating weekend.

Details

The Season, Quietly

White Pumpkins & Fall Touches

White heirloom and blue toile pumpkins grouped in odd numbers. No orange anywhere.

Underfoot

Navy Stripe Rugs & Coir Mats

Layer a navy-and-cream stripe or buffalo check underneath a smaller coir mat for depth.

After Five

Copper & Brass Lanterns

Fall light goes gold early. A pair of lanterns flanking the door does the rest.

Texture

Wicker Planters & Baskets

Wicker and rattan carry the season better than any pumpkin — fill them with boxwood or ivy.

The Console

Ginger Jars, Vases & Dried Hydrangea

A pair of blue-and-white jars, one full of dried hydrangea, and the entry is finished.

One Beach Note

Rope Mirrors, Trays & Hooks

One nautical detail — a rope mirror or a whale hook — is the whole beach reference you need.

Before You Order

How to Style a Coastal Fall Entry

  1. 1. White pumpkins only. Three sizes, odd numbers, grouped to one side of the door — never split evenly.
  2. 2. Wreath at eye level. 22 to 24 inches, hung just above the middle panel, navy ribbon trailing.
  3. 3. Layer the mats. Big navy stripe rug underneath, small coir mat on top. Instant depth.
  4. 4. Wicker does the season. Two large planters flanking the door with boxwood or trailing ivy.
  5. 5. Dried hydrangea inside. One ginger jar of dried blooms on the console and the entry is done.

Questions We Get

Coastal Fall Entry Questions

How do you decorate for fall without orange?
Swap the pumpkins to white and the foliage to blue-green. Keep the palette navy, blue, cream and natural wicker, then let texture — rope, coir, rattan, dried hydrangea — do the seasonal work.
What wreath works for a coastal fall door?
A blue-and-white hydrangea wreath with a navy ribbon reads fall on a shingled house far better than burlap and sunflowers. 22 to 24 inches on a standard 36 inch door.
How many pumpkins should go on the steps?
Odd numbers, three sizes, grouped to one side of the door rather than split evenly. Two or three white heirloom pumpkins plus one raised on a pedestal is plenty.
What doormat layers best for fall?
A large navy-and-cream striped or buffalo check rug underneath, with a smaller coir mat on top. The layered look adds depth and keeps the coir out of the weather.
What belongs on the console just inside the door?
A pair of ginger jars, one filled with dried hydrangea, a rattan tray for keys, a lamp, and a rope or whale detail as the single beach note.
When should a fall entry go up?
Early September through late November. Because there is no orange or Halloween styling, this palette carries all the way to Thanksgiving without a second refresh.
