Every house that entertains well has one small corner devoted entirely to the idea of a good time, and ours is a gold rolling cart with white marble shelves parked where the afternoon light lands. The top shelf is the pretty one — a silver shaker, a jigger, a bowl of strawberries, coupes and martini glasses with pink bows tied at the stem, and a bucket of ice with something rosé in it. Behind it, a “Cheers” neon lightbox glows just enough to make the whole corner feel like six o’clock. Underneath, the wine rack does the storing and the stemware rail does the showing off, so nothing has to live in a cabinet. Then the glasses go in, and the glasses are the fun part: heart shot glasses in clear and pink, strawberry flutes, cherry and daisy juice glasses, aqua margarita tumblers, blush seashell wine glasses, and a bow tumbler for the morning after. A brushed gold tray corrals the bottles. A gold script “Happy Hour” hangs on the wall above it. Add roses in a glass vase, one candle, and pink napkins folded over the rail, and the cart is done — permanently pretty, and ready in about four minutes.

The Formula

The Nantucket Formula

Every layer that makes this room work — and why.

  1. 01
    A Cart on Wheels

Gold frame, white marble shelves, wine rack below — it rolls to the porch, the living room, or wherever the party actually ended up.

  2. 02
    One Glowing Word

A “Cheers” neon lightbox is the whole mood in one object, and it makes the corner photograph beautifully after dark.

  3. 03
A Tray to Stop the Sprawl

A brushed gold round tray gives the bottles a border. Without it, a bar cart looks like a countertop.

  4. 04
    Glassware in Three Heights

Flutes, coupes or martinis, and short tumblers. Staggered heights are what make a cart look styled instead of stocked.

  5. 05
    One Color Story, Repeated

Blush pink and gold with a little aqua for contrast — pink bows, pink napkins, pink stems, pink flowers.

  6. 06
    Something Silly

Heart shot glasses and heart straws. A bar cart is the one place in the house allowed to be completely unserious.

  7. 07
    Real Flowers, Cut Short

A low glass vase of roses at the back corner keeps the cart from reading like a liquor shelf.

  8. 08
    Words on the Wall

Gold script “Happy Hour” above the cart finishes the vignette and gives the wall a reason to be there.

Every house that entertains well has one small corner devoted entirely to the idea of a good time.

A gentle roadmap

Complete the Look in Stages

The best rooms are never finished in a weekend. If you're building this room slowly, here is the order we'd bring things home.

  1. 01
    Foundation

Begin with the anchor — the sofa, the rug, or the bed. It sets the scale and the palette for everything else.

  2. 02
    Lighting

Layer the light next. A pair of lamps and one small warm bulb do more for the room than any wall color.

  3. 03
    Textiles

Add the softness — pillows, throws, a runner. This is where the room begins to feel like yours.

  4. 04
    Accessories

Bring in the ginger jars, the trays, the framed watercolors. Style in vignettes of three.

  5. 05
    Finishing Touches

Candles, greenery, the small found thing. The details that make the room feel collected, not decorated.

Designer commentary

Editor's Notes

Editor's Note

Style the cart in thirds

Bottles and tray on one side, glassware in the middle, flowers and the neon at the back corner. Three zones is what keeps a small cart from looking crowded.

Designer Tip

Let the stemware hang

Use the rail underneath. Glasses hanging upside down read like a real bar and free the marble for the pretty things.

Styling Secret

Mix novelty with one serious glass

Heart shots and bow flutes are charming because a plain crystal martini glass is sitting next to them.

From the Editor

Always leave one empty surface

Somewhere to set a drink down. A bar cart with no free marble is a display, not a bar.
