Hydrangea Home

For six weeks each summer the island belongs to the hydrangea. The mophead varieties turn the deep periwinkle only Nantucket soil can coax out of them, spilling over picket fences and softening every gray-shingled corner. Locals plan gardens around them. Visitors plan trips around them. And the rest of the year we do our best to keep a little of that bloom indoors.

This collection is about carrying that summer blue into the other ten months. Faux mophead stems arranged loosely in a milk-glass pitcher, so they read as if they were cut that morning. A dried hydrangea wreath on the front door in October. A hydrangea-print tea towel over the oven handle. A single blue bloom pressed under glass and framed above the desk.

The rule I keep coming back to is that hydrangeas want to look casual. Not styled, not fanned, not fluffed — just gathered, the way you'd pull them from the garden with kitchen shears and drop them in whatever pitcher was nearest. Even the faux stems in this collection are chosen because they hold that easy shape. Bring the hedge inside, let it lean, and the room forgets what month it is.
