Coastal Bedroom

The Nantucket bedroom is a study in the color white and the many quiet things it can do. White linen sheets that have gone soft in the wash. A white matelassé coverlet, folded down. A white slipcovered headboard that reads as furniture from ten feet away and as laundry up close. The window open to the hedge, the curtains lifting a little, the whole room breathing.

Layers are what save a white room from feeling like a hotel. A blue-stripe quilt folded at the foot of the bed, ready for the fog that always rolls in around three a.m. A wool throw over the reading chair. A wicker nightstand with a little brass lamp and a stack of paperbacks somebody's aunt left behind in 1998. A single hydrangea, freshly cut, in a jelly jar on the dresser — no other flower necessary.

The guest room, especially, should feel like a small love letter to whoever is staying in it. A carafe of water on the tray. A folded quilt they can pull up if they get cold. A window that opens. A pair of slippers. It costs almost nothing to do, and it is the thing they will tell their friends about for years — not the harbor, not the beach, but the bedroom where they slept better than they have in months.
