Brass & Lanterns

The light in a Nantucket cottage is what makes the whole thing work. Overhead, it should be warm — never white, never cold, never anything that reminds you of an office. Underfoot, it should be low and pooled, the way a lantern pools light on a doormat, the way a candle pools on a supper table. You want the kind of light people lean into, not the kind they squint under.

Brass earns its place in a coastal house because it belongs to the sea. Ship's fittings, cleats, portholes, binoculars, sextants — the island grew up with the alloy, and it grows old beautifully alongside cedar shingles and salt air. Lanterns do the outdoor version of the same job. A pair on either side of the front door at dusk is the single kindest thing you can do for a house — it says the porch is lit, the family is home, the kettle is on. A rattan chandelier over the dining table softens even the most formal supper. A solar teak lantern in the garden turns the last hour of the day into a room. Light the house well and the house looks after itself.
