The Feature · Issue No. 06 · The Palette
Blue & White,
Forever.
Three centuries on, the oldest coastal palette is still the one an island room reaches for first.
A Note from the Editors
“Buy one blue-and-white piece you love — a lamp, a pair of jars, a length of block-printed fabric — and let the rest of the room rearrange itself around it. It always does.”
There is no coastal palette older, or more forgiving, than blue and white. It arrived on porcelain in the holds of clipper ships three hundred years ago — jars and ginger pots and tureens traded out of Canton — and it never really left the island. Walk down any lane in 'Sconset in July and you'll see the whole history of it in ten steps: hydrangeas foaming against the shingles, a striped awning slung over a screen door, a pair of Chinese jars on a scrubbed pine hutch, a block-printed cloth on the picnic table under the arbor.
The reason it endures is simple: blue and white is a rest for the eye. It borrows from the harbor, the hydrangea hedge, and the four-o'clock sky — colors the island wears for six full months of the year — and echoes them indoors so the rooms never feel disconnected from the view outside. A ticking-stripe pillow tempers a slipcovered sofa. A single ginger jar anchors a mantel that had been trying, and failing, for a year. A chinoiserie garden stool becomes a side table by the front door, casually holding the reading glasses no one can find.
We think of blue and white as one palette, but it is really a small family of blues: the hazy, watery cornflower of the Delft potters; the deep cobalt of a summer night off Great Point; the powdery, weathered blue of a Nantucket shutter that has weathered thirty winters. Set any one of these against a chalky, unbleached white — linen, ironstone, whitewashed pine — and the room begins to look composed without ever looking decorated.
What follows is a feature in four chapters — the mantel, the sofa, the entry, the table — with the pieces we would use to build each one. Read it as a magazine story or shop it as a room. Or, better still, do both: bookmark it now, and come back the next Sunday morning you find yourself moving furniture, cup of coffee in hand, trying to remember where you first saw the ginger jar you cannot stop thinking about.
The Feature · A Room in Four Chapters
Chapter One
The Mantel & The Living Room
Where the collection begins — a pair of ginger jars on the shelf, a chinoiserie garden stool pulled up beside the slipcovered sofa, a ticking-stripe pillow softening the linen.

Decor
Blue & White Koi Fish Ginger Jar — Hand Painted Porcelain Temple Jar
Classic cobalt koi swimming through waves and bubbles on a lidded temple jar — the piece that anchors a foyer table or a mantel and looks like it came from a Nantucket estate sale.

Decor
Lilly Pulitzer Chinoiserie Ginger Jar — Glisten Green & Blue Floral
Palm-green and periwinkle Lilly print wrapped around a temple jar with a gold-capped lid — the happiest chinoiserie in the house, made for a stack of books and white hydrangeas.

Decor
Lilly Pulitzer Chinoiserie Ginger Jar — Safari Blue & White Toile
Cobalt cheetahs and zebras hidden in palm fronds with a thin gold band at the lid — blue-and-white from across the room, and a little wild once you get close.

Kitchen & Table
Blue & White Chinoiserie Landscape Porcelain Vase
A hand-painted mountain-and-river landscape wrapping a fluted-neck jar in that deep willow blue — the vase I'd stand on a kitchen hutch with three white hydrangea stems and nothing else.

Kitchen & Table
Blue Hydrangea & Ginger Jar Waffle Kitchen Towels — Set of 2
Watercolor hydrangeas tumbling out of chinoiserie jars printed on thick white waffle cotton — the cheapest way to change the whole feel of a kitchen, and they wash beautifully.

Pillows & Throws
LVTXIII Outdoor Cabana Navy Stripe Lumbar Pillow Covers, 12" x 20" (Set of 2)
Wide cabana stripes in navy and white on fade-resistant outdoor canvas — the pair I'd toss on teak porch chairs and never worry about after a squall.

Pillows & Throws
Cozoomy Moroccan Tufted Plush Throw Pillow Covers, 18"x18" Beige (Set of 2)
Soft ivory plush worked in a raised Moroccan trellis with a little shaggy fringe along the diamonds — the neutral pair I'd layer against a blue-and-white striped chair to keep a room from going too crisp.
Chapter Two
The Sofa, Softened
The way an island room lets you sink in: a blue-stripe throw folded across the arm of the slipcover, a hydrangea-toile pillow at the small of your back, a rug faded to the exact color of the harbor at four o'clock.

Pillows & Throws
Pastel Coral Linen Throw Pillow Cover — Blush Watercolor Floral Print
A soft oatmeal linen cover printed with a loose watercolor botanical in coral, blush and sage — the pillow I'd set against a white slipcovered sofa or a blush bed to warm up all that blue and white without shouting.

Pillows & Throws
Sea Glass Pillow Cover — Blue Green Botanical Coastal Cushion
Queen Anne's lace and wild grasses washed across sea-glass blue linen — the softest way to bring green into a blue-and-white room, and it plays beautifully next to a ticking stripe.

Kitchen & Table
Light Blue & White Scalloped Stripe Tablecloth — Coastal Beach Wedding Table Linen
A soft cabana stripe finished with a scalloped edge — the cloth that turns a folding table at a bridal shower into something that looks like it came off a Nantucket porch.

Bedroom
Blue Striped Duvet Cover Set — Country French Coastal Bedding
A narrow cornflower ticking stripe with a crisp white reverse — the duvet that makes a guest room look like a summer house before you have added a single other thing.

Pillows & Throws
Striped Sailboat Pillow Cover — Nautical Coastal Cottage Cushion Case
A watercolor catboat with blue ticking sails on natural canvas — the middle pillow that gives a white sofa its story.

Pillows & Throws
Chunky Knit Anchor Throw Blanket — Coastal Nautical Lake House Decor
Heavy cream chunky knit with a slate blue anchor and banded stripes — the blanket that lives on the porch sofa from Labor Day straight through October.

Decor
Blue Bone Inlay Round Mirror — Handmade Stripe Inlay
Hand-cut navy-and-ivory bone inlay laid in a sunburst of tiny stripes around a round mirror — the one piece I'd hang over a white-slipcovered entry bench with a lightship basket and a jug of hydrangeas underneath.
Chapter Three
The Entry & The Front Door
The first blue-and-white gesture anyone sees. A rope wreath on the shingles, a door basket of hydrangeas at the step, a nautical mirror over the console for the last check before the ferry.

Decor
Seashell & Starfish Driftwood Wreath — Navy & White
Bleached driftwood layered with scallop shells, abalone, coral, and navy starfish — the summer door piece I'd hang between two blue-and-white planters of hydrangea topiaries.

Florals
22" Thick Nautical Rope Wreath with Navy & White Accent Line
A big 22-inch woven sailor's knot in heavy manila with navy and white rope laced through the weave — the one for a wide door or a garage-side wall where a small wreath disappears.

Florals
Nautical Bow Navy Blue Linen Anchor Wreath — Front Door Rope Wreath
A sailor's knot of thick white rope dressed with navy-and-white polka-dot ribbon, chambray linen tails and printed anchor accents — the front-door bow that reads coastal cottage the moment you walk up the path.

Florals
Icy Blue Floral Arrangement — Winter Wonderland Holiday Centerpiece
White hydrangeas, frosted pinecones, glittered branches, and icy-blue ornaments gathered in a mirrored silver bowl — the holiday centerpiece I'd run down a white linen table with mercury-glass votives for a coastal Christmas that still feels blue and white.

Home Decor
Blue & White Mediterranean Palm Wallpaper — Art Deco Fan
A soft powder-blue art-deco palm-fan repeat on cream — the powder-room wallpaper I'd hang above white board-and-batten with a rounded nickel mirror and a pair of milk-glass sconces for that quiet Nantucket-meets-Amalfi moment.

Porch & Garden
Coastal Anchor Nautical Outdoor Planter Box (Navy & White)
A navy-blue shiplap planter box with a chunky ivory anchor and rope detail — the front-porch piece I'd flank the entryway with, spilling over with white petunias and blue delphinium all summer long.

Indoor Furniture
Bellemave 48" Navy Blue Bathroom Vanity with Barn Doors & 6 Drawers
Deep harbor navy with X-braced barn doors, oil-rubbed black pulls, and a white integrated top — the single piece that turns a builder-grade bathroom into a Nantucket one. Hang a rope mirror above it and you're done.
Chapter Four
The Table & The Kitchen
Where the palette turns to breakfast — canisters lined along the counter, a vase of white hydrangeas at the center of the table, a tea towel slung over the oven handle waiting for August blueberries.

Home Decor
Coastal Book Stack — Set of 4 Blue & Cream Coffee Table Books
Four cloth-bound novels in navy, cream and pale blue chosen for their spines — the instant coffee-table stack I'd set under a piece of white coral with a bowl of shells alongside.

Kitchen & Table
Spode Blue Italian Pitcher — Classic Blue & White Transferware
The original 1816 Italian pattern in deep cobalt transferware on a cream ground — the pitcher I'd fill with hydrangeas on a Nantucket table or use for lemonade on the porch. It reads heirloom from across the room.

Kitchen & Table
Vintage Blue & White Tall Pitcher — Heron & Water Lily Transferware
Two herons wading through water lilies on a tall antique ewer with a banded rim — the one piece I'd put in the middle of a sideboard and let carry the whole room.

Lighting
3-Wick Citronella Soy Candle in Blue & White Tin, 75-Hour Burn
Three wicks of citronella soy wax in a blue-and-white porcelain-print tin — the one bug candle pretty enough to leave out on the porch table all season long.

Kitchen
Blue & White Floral Coffee, Sugar & Tea Canister Set
A trio of enamel canisters — Coffee, Sugar, and Tea — hand-printed in classic blue-and-white rose florals with polished chrome swing handles and lids, the sweet little countertop moment I'd line up beside a white farmhouse toaster and a bowl of lemons.

Home Decor
MacKenzie-Childs Sky Check Enamel Large Flower Vase (Light Blue & White)
Hand-painted sky-blue checks on a curvy enamel vase — the perfect just-right-height centerpiece for hydrangeas on the dining table without blocking a single conversation.

Kitchen
Portuguese Azulejo Blue & White Oval Serving Platter
Hand-painted Portuguese azulejo tilework on a generous oval platter — the kind of blue-and-white serving piece I bring out for clambakes and prop on the kitchen shelf the other 364 days.
The Rest of the Feature
Odds, Ends & Small Blue Things
The lamps, boxes, and small blue-and-white gestures that finish a room without ever announcing themselves.

Kitchen & Table
UPware 12-Piece Blue & White Floral Melamine Dinnerware Set (Service for 4)
Scalloped, beaded rims painted with a delft-blue floral spray — melamine, so it goes to the porch and the picnic table without a single held breath, but it photographs like china.

Bedroom
Navy Stripe & Red Anchor Comforter Set with Shams
Bold navy-and-white cabana stripes with a big red rope anchor front and center — the little-sailor bedding I'd put in a bunk room with a captain's wheel over the bed and a string of signal flags across the wall.

Baskets & Storage
Navy Anchor Canvas Storage Basket with Leather Handles
Collapsible waterproof canvas printed with white anchors and finished with tan leather handles — mine holds beach towels by the door all summer and blankets by the sofa all winter.

Home Decor
DriftAway Navy & White Cabana Stripe Grommet Curtains
Big awning stripes in true navy and white — instant beach-club energy in a bedroom, and they hang beautifully off a simple black rod.

Home Decor
Navy Ship Wheel & Rope-Wrapped Anchor Wall Decor Set
A weathered navy ship's wheel and a matching anchor, both bound in jute rope — hung together on white beadboard in a bunk room or a back hall, they do all the nautical work a room needs without tipping into theme.

Home Decor
Blue Lobster Hand-Block-Print Coastal Table Runner
A pure-cotton hand-block-print table runner in French-blue and white with a whimsical procession of lobsters and coral vines — the picnic-table hero I'd run down a weathered farmhouse table set with blue-and-white plates, hydrangea posies, and coupes of rosé.

Florals & Art
Star Girl Navy Script Skateboard Wall Art — It-Girl Coquette Deck
A glossy white maple skateboard deck printed with navy calligraphy script reading "Star Girl" — the coolest coquette wall moment I'd hang above a canopy bed with a satin bow tied to the trucks and a strand of fairy lights draped along the molding.

Footwear
Women's Classic Navy Flat Espadrilles
Handwoven jute-soled flat espadrilles in classic navy canvas — the everyday summer shoe I'd slip on with white linen shorts and a striped tee for market mornings and cobblestone strolls into town.
Complete the Look
The Pieces Around the Blues
Blue and white does its best work with company. A linen slipcover, a jute rug, a mass of hydrangeas, a brass lantern — the quiet supporting cast that makes the palette sing.

Pillows & Throws
Pale Pink Tiny Palm Print Pillow Cover — Cotton Linen Blend
A tiny blush palm motif block-printed across ivory cotton-linen — the small-scale pattern I'd pair with a wide stripe and a solid so a bed reads collected instead of matchy.

Home Decor
Coastal Calm — Cottage Core Photography Coffee Table Book
Shingled porches, white hydrangeas and quiet grey water, page after page — the book I'd leave open on an ottoman in August and give to anyone who has ever loved a beach house.

Florals
Blue Hydrangea Farmhouse Box Arrangement — Long Dining Table Centerpiece
Faux blue mopheads spilling over a low black wood box with trailing eucalyptus — the long centerpiece I'd run down a dining table or a kitchen island and never think about again from June to October.

Pillows & Throws
Blue Coastal Seashell Lumbar Pillow — Scalloped Watercolor Bolster Cover
A watercolor scallop shell inside a scalloped cornflower border with sand-colored coral branching out either side — the lumbar I'd lay across a hall bench or the foot of a guest bed.

Home Decor
Decorative Book Stack with Floral Arrangement — Coffee Table Centerpiece
A stack of white cloth books topped with pink and lilac daisies and white hydrangea — the shortcut to a styled coffee table, and it moves outside for a shower or a garden lunch.

Furniture
TOLEAD Flower Pattern Door Storage Cabinet — White Accent Sideboard
Carved petal doors on slim gold legs — the white sideboard I'd float in a hallway for table linens, or behind a sofa with a pair of lamps and a fat jug of hydrangeas.

Baskets & Storage
Water Hyacinth Handwoven Tissue Box Cover — Square Wicker Napkin Box
A square of thick braided hyacinth that turns a drugstore tissue box into something you'd leave out — I keep one on the powder room counter and one on the guest room nightstand.

Baskets & Storage
Round Water Hyacinth Wicker Waste Basket — 2 Gallon Bathroom Trash Can
Two gallons of chunky woven hyacinth with a softly flared rim — the little bin that makes a bathroom or a desk corner look finished instead of utilitarian.
